Moving into a house is different from moving into a condo. There’s no elevator to book, but there are other things to think about: front steps, narrow staircases, basements, driveways and street parking. We move families into North York houses every week, from bungalows in Don Mills to newer builds in Willowdale and older homes near York Mills.
Here’s what we’ve learned, and what we tell our own customers before the big day.
1. Measure the Tight Spots Before Moving Day
Many North York homes built in the ’50s and ’60s have narrow staircases and tight turns at the top. Before you move that king bed or sectional, measure:
- Front door width and the turn into the hallway
- The stairwell, especially any landing or ceiling drop
- Basement doors, which are often narrower than you expect
If something won’t fit, don’t panic. Most beds, tables and sectionals can be taken apart. Our crew handles furniture disassembly and reassembly as part of the move.

2. Sort Out Parking for the Truck
A moving truck parked right at your door saves a lot of time, and time is money on an hourly move. If you have a driveway, keep it clear on moving day. If you’re on a busy street, think about where the truck can safely stop. The closer we park, the faster the move.
3. Protect Your New Floors and Walls
New house, new hardwood. We wrap every piece of furniture in moving blankets and shrink-wrap sofas and mattresses, which protects your door frames and walls as much as your furniture. If you have fresh paint or new floors, tell us when you book and we’ll take extra care.
4. Plan Room by Room
Label every box with the room it belongs in, not just what’s inside. “Kitchen”, “Main bedroom” and “Basement” make unloading much faster. If you have a floor plan, tape a simple sketch near the front door so the crew knows where everything goes.
5. Pick the Right Crew Size
For most 2–3 bedroom houses, our 3-mover crew ($185/hour) is the sweet spot. Bigger houses with full basements and garages usually go faster with 4 movers and 2 trucks ($280/hour). The right crew size often costs less overall, because the job finishes sooner. See more in our guide to how much movers cost in North York.
6. Don’t Forget the Boring Stuff
- Utilities: set up hydro, gas, water and internet before you arrive.
- Mail: set up Canada Post mail forwarding a couple of weeks before moving day.
- ID and health card: update your address with ServiceOntario’s change of address service.
7. Make the First Night Easy
Pack an “open first” box with bedding, towels, a kettle, phone chargers, medication, toilet paper and a few snacks. After a long moving day, you’ll be glad you did. Want to skip unpacking completely? Our packing and unpacking service can set up your kitchen and bedrooms for you.
